In February of 2010, HW hosted the First Amman City Café, modeled on the World Café concept, providing a chance for a group of diverse citizens of Amman to discuss their thoughts and opinions on shared space in the city. Feedback from the Café participants was varied and reflected both the diversity of the group and that of the city.

When asked what type of public places people enjoy in the city, what emerged most was people’s attachment to the older parts of the city and the character and architecture of old Amman. Another emergent theme was a yearning for individuality, and the desire for more urban attributes to the city, which allow for anonymity and freedom.

The types of public places the participants said they avoid in the city were unfamiliar areas, shopping malls and places exhibiting excessive consumerism and places where they felt a certain sense of intrusion such as an invasion of privacy, indoor smoking, and harassment.

Participants were then asked where in the city they come across people different from themselves or from outside their community. Responses ranged from places of common interest, such as associations and guilds, to crowd-based places such as public institutions, souqs and malls. There was also a discussion around the notion of “comfort zones” and those places, which allow, or force, people to move beyond them.

Finally, participants were asked what places they would like to find in the city but which are currently not available. A specific theme emerged around longing for cultural, artistic and open-air places that allow people to just ‘come and be together.’  The “culture of being together” in itself was mentioned as a concept that needed to be built on. There was also a repeated call to correct features that tend to detract from the value of existing public places such as safety, management, inclusivity and maintenance.

في شباط من عام 2010، استضافت همزة وصل أول جلسة من جلسات  “مقهى عمان” ، على غرار مفهوم “مقهى العالم”، موفرة بذلك فرصة لمجموعة متنوعة من المواطنين العمانيين لمناقشة الأفكار والآراء حول المساحات المشتركة في المدينة. التغذية المرتجعة من المشاركين في المقهى كان متفاوتا ويعكس التنوع الموجود في المجموعة والمدينة نفسها.

ردا على سؤال حول ما هو نوع من الأماكن العامة التي يستمتع الناس بزيارتها في المدينة، وجدنا ان معظم ما انبثق كان مرده تعلق الناس بالأجزاء القديمة، والحرف، والهندسة المعمارية لعمان القديمة. ومن المواضيع التي تم ملاحظتها هي التشوق إلى الهوية المتفردة، والرغبة في سمات أكثر حضرية للمدينة التي تسمح بالخصوصية والحرية.

وقد قال المشاركون أن أنواع الأماكن العامة التي يتجنبونها في المدينة هي المناطق غير المألوفة، ومراكز التسوق والأماكن التي تمثل النزعات الاستهلاكية المفرطة وفيها إقتحام من الآخرين لخصوصيتهم، يحصل فيها تدخين داخل الأماكن المغلقة، والتحرش.

ثم تم سؤال المشاركين عن الأماكن في المدينة التي يلتقون فيها بأناس مختلفين عن أنفسهم أو من خارج مجتمعاتهم المحلية. تراوحت الأجوبة من الأماكن ذات الطابع المشترك، مثل الجمعيات والنقابات، إلى أماكن الجاذبة للحشود مثل المؤسسات العامة والمعارض ومراكز التسوق. كما كان هناك نقاش حول مفهوم “مناطق الراحة” وتلك الأماكن التي تسمح، أو تجبر الناس على تجاوز هذا المفهوم.

وأخيراً، تم سؤال المشاركين عن ماهية الأماكن التي يودون أن يجدوها في المدينة والغير متوفرة حاليا. فبرز موضوع محدد حول الرغبة العميقة بوجود أماكن ثقافية وفنية في الهواء الطلق التي تسمح للناس بمجرد التواجد سويا فيها.  وذكروا ان مفهوم ثقافة أن نتواجد معا بغض النظر عن خلفياتنا هو في حد ذاته كمفهوم ضرورة أن يكون أساسيا. وكان هناك أيضا دعوة متكررة لتصحيح  أوضاع بعض المرافق التي تفتقدها الأماكن العامة مثل السلامة وإدارة والشمولية والصيانة.
