This Heritage Challenge was designed to provide a group of 17 American students with a deeper understanding of Amman and its people. Beginning at the Hamzet Wasel office, groups set off to Balad where they proceeded to work their way through a series of challenges. The first required groups to purchase six items in a downtown “souq”, or market, for 1 dinar or less beginning only with the Arabic letter “fah”. Following this initial challenge, groups proceeded to follow clues to three different sites where they had to complete challenges; “Palestine Juice” to participate in the juice-making process and make products for customers; Mahatta-Hijaz to fill in a map of the old rail line, and calligraphy instruction at Diwan Al-Duke. Following these challenges, groups found their way to a house in Jabal Qala’a where the Iskandarani family generously provided lunch and conversation. After lunch, participants joined with Jabal Qala’a children to make kites and fly them at the Citadel.

بدأ التحدي من مكتب همزة وصل، وانطلقت الفرق بإتجاه وسط البلد ليبدؤا مجموعة من التحديات كان أولها شراء ستة أشياء تبدأ بحرف “الفاء” وبميزانية دينار واحد أو أقل لكل فريق. بعد هذا التحدي الممتع والذي لم يكن سهلا إنطلقت الفرق على ثلاث مسارات مختلفة إشتملت على “فلسطين للعصير” وهو كشك عصير طبيعي صغير في البلد طلب منهم تحضير العصير للزبائن وبيعه، “محطة الحجاز” وهناك كان على الفرق تعبئة ورقة توضح خط سير القطار في زمن إنشاؤه وتشغيله، والتحدي الأخير كان تعلم الخط العربي في “ديوان الدوق”.

بعد إنتهاء التحديات توجهت الفرق الى منزل عائلة الإسكندراني في جبل القلعة لتناول طعام الغذاء بضيافتهم الكريمة والتحاور مع أفراد من المجتمع ليتعرفوا أكثر عن تكوين العلاقات وطبيعة السكان. وختاما لهذا اليوم الجميل قام المشاركون بتعلم صناعة الطيارات الورقية وتطييرها مع أطفال جبل القلعة في أعلى الجبل.
